Luckily, this purple smoothie is super-easy to make, without any weird ingredients. You can drink it on its own for a nice antioxidant boost, or dress it up like a “Witch’s Brew” Smoothie for Halloween! I think it would also be perfect when making my healthy layered popsicles, if you need a purple layer. (My son asks for layered popsicles every year at Christmas, the cute guy, and this year he has requested yellow, green, and purple layers.)

How to Make a Purple Smoothie

To make a purple smoothie, all you need are some frozen blueberries and bananas to get the color right. The banana lightens up the blueberries, so they aren’t quite as dark, giving the overall smoothie the purple color we’re going for. I added orange juice and pineapple to make my kids love the flavor, but I also made a version using coocnut milk instead of orange juice for a “blueberry piña colada” flavor. Either way, it’s good! Like most smoothies, you can adjust the ingredients to your preference, or to use whatever you have on hand. My kids only drink 3 ounces of smoothies at a time lately, but this recipe makes about 16-20 ounces total.

Recipe Notes:

To lower the sugar content of this recipe, replace the orange juice with coconut milk. (This will also make the shake more filling, thanks to the added fat.) Feel free to add your favorite unflavored protein powder to make this recipe a meal replacement.

– Reader Feedback: Do you ever need a specific color when making smoothies? I imagine this is just a “mom thing” but maybe people have other reasons, too!
