What Is a Mojito?

This cocktail is collective favorite in my home! I always have fresh mint and limes on hand. They are such great ingredients to have handy. We can just never get sick of having a fresh mojito to sip on for lunch, dinner, or as a nice treat in the evening after a busy day. This cocktail is a very simple and to-the-point. We have fresh mint and lime muddled with white rum, sweetened with sugar or simple syrup, and topped off with soda. This fresh drink is a Cuban classic that has gained popularity to become a staple cocktail all over the world.

Ingredient Notes

Fresh mint leaves – Remove your mint from the stem before using it. Limes – Get yourself lots of limes for this recipe. If you’re serving guests, a few extra for wedges won’t hurt. White Rum – This recipe is written so each drink will have 1 oz of rum. You can use more or less. Simple syrup – You can find this at the grocery store pre-made or make it yourself at home. Ice & soda – Any brand of soda you like best will work. Even sparkling water!

How to Make Simple Syrup

You can use regular granulated sugar in this recipe, but simple syrup is very easy to make and will mix into your mojitos so much better. Granulated sugar will take a while to dissolve and you will likely end up with lots of it settling at the bottom of your pitcher. To make simple syrup, follow these steps: I always like to have a supply of simple syrup in my fridge. It’s fantastic for sweetening any type of cold drink! Lemonade, cocktails, iced coffee or tea; you name it. Who wants to sit around trying to get sugar to dissolve in a cold drink? Not me! It’ll also last an entire 6 months in your fridge.

What Other Types of Alcohol Work?

I would only use clear types of alcohol for this recipe. The flavors are very light and delicate so we want to make sure they don’t get overpowered by a strong tasting alcohol. You can use vodka, gin, or cachaca instead of rum. Don’t want any alcohol in your mojito at all? That’s okay! You can make virgin mojitos as well and they will taste great.

Tips And Tricks

Always use fresh limes and mint. You’ll get the best and most authentic flavor for a mojito. Keep the mint leaves whole – don’t cut them. Smaller pieces make it more difficult to drink. Just muddle until the juices have released from the lime and the mint is bruised. Everyone has a different preference for sweetness. Taste as you add simple syrup until you get the perfect balance for your tastebuds.
