The Best Honey Mustard Sauce

I’ve got to say, this Honey Mustard Sauce is hands down my favorite sauce of all time – and I don’t say that lightly! In just 5 minutes, you can create this rich, velvety sauce that beautifully marries the sweetness of honey with the tang of mustard, finished with a zesty lemon twist. It’s an absolute dream on everything, from crispy fried chicken to fresh salads, making it a versatile superstar in my kitchen.

Mayonnaise: Store-bought or homemade. If you’re looking for a lighter option, feel free to use Greek yogurt or even a vegan mayo. Dijon Mustard: It adds a sophisticated, sharp tang. You can swap it with any grainy mustard if you like a bit more texture. Yellow Mustard: This brings in that classic mustard flavor. If you’re out of yellow mustard, a mild mustard works just fine. Honey: It’s all about the sweetness here, balancing the sharpness of the mustards. Maple syrup can be a great alternative if you prefer. Lemon Juice: This zingy addition brightens up the sauce. No lemon juice? White wine vinegar can also do the trick. Paprika: It adds a subtle hint of warmth and color. Smoked paprika is a great option if you like a smoky flavor. Salt and Pepper: Adjust to taste.

Start by grabbing a medium bowl and whisking together the mayonnaise, Dijon mustard, yellow mustard, and honey until they’re beautifully smooth and integrated. Then, add a splash of lemon juice for that bright zing and a sprinkle of paprika for a hint of warmth. Finish off by seasoning with salt and pepper to your liking. It’s a breeze to make and before you know it, you’ve got a versatile sauce ready to elevate any dish!

Storage

To keep your Honey Mustard Sauce fresh and tasty, store it in an airtight container in the refrigerator. This sauce generally stays good for up to a week, possibly longer depending on the freshness of your ingredients. Make sure to give it a good stir before using it again, as some separation might occur.

Honey Mustard Sauce

I’m never giving my husband the job as “taste-tester” again. 😑 I had to make an entire new batch of this Honey Mustard because he basically attacked the bowl. (It didn’t help that he had a warm tortilla filled with cheese that was perfectly for dunking.) The reason that honey mustard is so delicious is that it’s got so many flavor elements that hit you all at once, but in a perfectly harmonized way. There’s a little bit of sweet, sour, savory, and tang in this recipe. It’s thick and creamy, but not too “mayo” like. The ratio of ingredients is a perfect fit.

How to Make It

See recipe card below this post for ingredient quantities and full instructions.

Add all ingredients to a medium bowl. Whisk vigorously until the consistency is completely smooth, it will take a minute or two. You can serve it immediately, however it tastes best if chilled in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes. This allows the flavors to combine and the consistency to thicken.

What Is Honey Mustard Used for

My Honey Mustard Chicken recipe is the perfect way to make a meal out of honey mustard sauce. Honey Mustard also makes a perfect dipping sauce for chicken tenders, fried pickles, sausage balls, pretzels, pigs in a blanket, and more. It is also perfect salad dressing, especially on Crispy Chicken Salad! Finally, you can brush some onto chicken or pork chops for additional flavor!

Pro Tips

Spicy Brown Mustard can be used if you don’t have Dijon. Plain Greek Yogurt can be used instead of Mayo. White Vinegar can be substituted if you don’t have apple cider vinegar. Refrigerate for at least 30 minutes prior to serving if time allows. If you like making homemade salad dressings, be sure to try my Greek Salad Dressing and my Balsamic Vinaigrette!
