Why spend extra money at the grocery store and take up even more room in your pantry when you can mix up your favorite seasonings with what you already have? I’m a sucker for anything spice related, trust me. I know how hard it is to stop my eye from wandering down the spice aisle. Once you take a close look at what’s actually in your favorite blends, you’ll find that you have most of, if not all, the ingredients at home already! So use up those wonderful herbs and spices already in your pantry. Skip yet another trip to the grocery store and have your own homemade poultry seasoning ready to go in a matter of minutes.

Ingredients

Herbs – Sage, thyme, marjoram, and rosemary. Nutmeg – Pre-ground or freshly grated. White pepper – I used pre-ground. If you can find whole white peppercorns, freshly ground would be great.

You can also add some salt to this seasoning if you’d like. Garlic and/or onion powder aren’t typically found in poultry seasonings but would taste amazing mixed into your blend if you want to amp it up a bit!

How to make homemade poultry seasoning

Homemade spice blends are so easy to make. I like to keep a good inventory of spices and herbs available in my pantry, then mix my blends fresh when I need them. It’s so much better when it’s nice and fresh!

How to store homemade spice blends

Since this is a recipe made entirely of dried ingredients, your spices will never “spoil” or go rotten. They’ll simply lose flavor and intensity over time. Since this recipe contains dried herbs, which lose their flavor fastest, this blend will last in your pantry for 1-3 years. It’s best to use a jar with a screw top to ensure your blend is airtight. If you’ve just washed a jar that you plan on using your poultry blend, you’ll have to make sure it has dried fully before storing your blend. Any presence of moisture can spoil when stored at room temperature.

What can I use my poultry seasoning in?

Sprinkle your homemade blend over chicken before roasting whole chicken, breasts, thighs, drumsticks. You can also use it when roasting a turkey. This seasoning is fantastic used to flavor stuffing as well! Now just because this is called “poultry” seasoning doesn’t mean you’re limited to using on only aviary proteins. These flavors would be fantastic with pork or light fish as well! It’s your seasoning, after all. Use it however you want! Toss it into some popcorn, sprinkle over veggies before roasting. Utilize that imagination. I used poultry seasoning in these amazing recipes:

Porcupine Meatballs One Pot Turkey Wild Rice Soup Spatchcock Chicken Instant Pot Chicken and Dumplings
