Easy Apple Crumble Recipe
If there’s a true classic dessert that we all know and love, it’s apple crumble. A sweet gooey filling made with tart granny smith apples, and some great apple pie spices, topped with a crunchy brown sugar and oat streusel topping – it’s pure comfort. In under and hour you can have this classic and delicious dessert on your table, ready to be topped with a big scoop of vanilla ice cream. If by chance, you’ve never had the pleasure of tasting apple crumble before – let me introduce you. This classic dessert has all the makings of an apple pie, without the pie crust. Hosting a scrumptious ooey-gooey filling, amplified with a delicious brown sugar-infused streusel topping. This is a foolproof recipe that would make even your grandmother proud! Now let’s get baking.
Filling
Apples – Such as Granny Smith or Golden Delicious. Sugar – Regular granulated will do the trick! Flour – I used plain all-purpose flour. Spices – I use my homemade apple pie spice which adds great flavor. Lemon Juice – I prefer freshly squeezed. Lemon helps to balance out the sweetness and also helps prevent apples from browning.
Crumble
Oats – I used rolled oats. Flour – Trusty all-purpose flour again to thicken up the filling a bit! Sugar – I use both white and packed brown sugar to add some sweetness. Spices – I use my homemade apple pie spice which adds great flavor. Salt – The salt is important to balance out the sweetness in the crumble, don’t skip it! Butter – I always opt for unsalted to control the sodium content. Just make sure the butter is melted!
This dessert is super simple! It’s essentially a one pan recipe and there is no need to cook the apples or the crumble ahead of time. Just follow this easy 3 step process and your crumble will come out perfectly!
Preheat The Oven And Pan
Before beginning any baking recipe you need to preheat your oven. So turn it on to 375°F (190°C) to get it nice and hot. Then grab a 9×13-inch baking dish to use to both assemble and bake the apple crumble.
Make The Filling
Now, you can start on the yummy apple filling! Add the cubed apples to a large bowl along with the sugar, flour, apple pie spice, and lemon juice. Then toss the mixture together with a rubber spatula until the apples are completely coated with all the ingredients. Now, pour the coated apples into the baking dish and spread them out evenly.
Make The Crumble Topping
Once your apple filling is ready, you need to make the crumble. To do this, add the rolled oats, flour, sugar, brown sugar, apple pie spice, salt, and melted butter to a new bowl and mix it together until clumps form. Then using your fingers crumble the topping over the apple mixture in the baking dish trying your best to distribute it evenly.
Bake And Serve
With the apple crumble fully assembled, you can now put it in the oven to bake for 35 to 40 minutes or until it’s golden brown on top and the apples are soft. Then once it’s done, serve it immediately with a big scoop of creamy vanilla ice cream, and enjoy!
What’s The Difference Between Apple Crisp VS Apple Crumble
There’s not a big difference between the two. The terms crisp and crumble are mostly interchangeable, but to some people they can mean two different things, so let me clarify! A crumble is chopped apples topped with a streusel topping, whereas a crisp includes oats. I included oats in my crumble because I am rebellious, but call it what you want – either way it’s delicious!
What Are The Best Apples To Use?
Granny smith are hands down the best baking apple. Why? Because they’re sturdy enough to prevent a gooey mess when pulled from the oven, and they’re nice and tart in flavor, which means that it holds up well to all the sugar we’re going to be adding to our dish. You can always use golden delicious instead but keep in mind that sugar levels may have to be adjusted. It all depends on your sweet tooth!
How To Serve
Right out of the pan with a spoon! Just kidding. This dessert is more than perfect on its own, it has crunch, sweetness, and that ooey gooey filling. Paired with a dollop of whipped cream, or a melty scoop of vanilla ice cream, and a drizzle of caramel, you’re not far off from perfection.
Leftover Apple Crumble
Make sure to let your apple crumble cool completely before storing in the fridge. Seal completely or transfer to an airtight container and store in the fridge for 3-5 days.
Freezing
Again, make sure your apple crumble has cooled completely before popping in the freezer in an airtight container and it will keep for up to 3 months! Allow to thaw overnight in the fridge before warming back up to serving temperature in the oven at 350°F for 20 – 25 minutes.

It’s an easy recipe with simple and affordable ingredients. The flavor-texture combination is unbeatable. Apple Crumble is perfect for any occasion, from everyday meals to elaborate holiday dinners. While we love to use apples to make more elaborate desserts, like our apple pie, apple tart, and apple cinnamon rolls, apple crumble is our go-to recipe when we are short on time or tired after work but still want to put a delicious dessert on the table. Like for apple crisp and apple bread, you can use leftover apples and a few simple pantry staples like butter, flour, and sugar. Feel free to add your favorite crumble add-ons, such as nuts and oats, or serve it with a spoonful of whipped cream and vanilla ice cream. But no matter what you do, let it have enough time in the oven so that the top becomes golden brown and crisps to perfection. Apples: You can use any apple variety, from fuji and golden delicious to pink ladies and granny smith. Substitute rhubarb, pears, or mixed berries for apples. All-purpose flour: You can substitute 1-to-1 gluten-free flour for all-purpose flour. Sugar: You can use brown or white sugar. Butter: You can substitute vegan butter for regular butter if you are vegan. Cinnamon: You can also add other spices, such as a pinch of nutmeg, clove, vanilla extract, allspice, and ginger. We like to add a grating of lemon zest to add freshness, but that’s optional. Salt: Remember to add a pinch of salt to the crumble. That sweet-salty combination will make your tongue dance. Cut the apples into thin slices. We like to keep the peel on, as it adds color and flavor and saves a good 10 minutes in the kitchen. But you can peel them if you prefer. Add the sliced apples to a large mixing bowl. Toss them with sugar, cinnamon, lemon zest, and lemon juice. Arrange them tightly into your baking dish. Tip: A tablespoon of lemon juice prevents the apples from browning. This is useful if you are making the crumble ahead of time or if you are freezing it. Mix the flour, sugar, salt, and diced cold butter in a separate bowl. You can crumble the ingredients with your hands, pinching the butter and flour until they are incorporated. You can also use a pastry cutter or give them a quick mix in a food processor. Tip: You want the flour to be crumbly but not dusty. Don’t overwork the mixture; you don’t want to make a dough. Crumble the mixture on top of the apples, clean the rim of the dish, and bake for 35 – 40 minutes. The apples should be tender, and the top should be golden brown. Let the crumble cool down for at least 15 minutes before serving it. As it cools, the top crisps up. It’s delicious with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream, but it’s also excellent as is. Let the crumble brown: Let the crumble color, as color equals flavor. The top should be dark amber or golden brown. Add-ons: You can enrich the crumble with your favorite add-ons, such as walnuts, pecans, hazelnuts, almonds, and oats. Lemon juice: Adding a tablespoon or two of lemon juice to the apples prevents them from browning. This is helpful if you are making the recipe ahead of time or freezing it. Refrigerator: Keep leftovers in the fridge for up to 4 days. Freezer: Make the crumble in a freezer-friendly dish. Wrap it in plastic or a freezer bag and freeze it before baking. It lasts 3 months. Cook from frozen for about 40 to 45 minutes. Reheat: Warm leftovers in a hot oven at 375°F or 190°C for 10 to 15 minutes. HOLIDAY DESSERTS: vegan biscotti, pear cake, vegan carrot cake, fruit tart, easy vanilla cake, Italian crostata, vegan pumpkin pie.
